Finally making my shark ponies...! Yay evilness. Sorry for the silly name, taxonomy was being mean. v_v Well, at least it's not like.. sharkalachi or something.
Name of Species: Selachi (Seaponies of the Selachi Order)
Appearance: They resemble sharks, and are closest in body and fin shape to tiger sharks. They’re streamlined but powerful, and especially muscular around the jaws, and tail to a lesser extent. They have two dorsal fins, a fin on the underbelly mirroring the second dorsal, and a pair on the underbelly in front of that. The lobes of the tail are vertical, and the top lobe is significantly larger than the bottom. All of the fins have sharp points, giving them an appropriate dangerous appearance. From the head to the start of the tail, they look more or less like regular ponies, complete with front legs and hooves. However, they also have multiple rows of very sharp teeth, five gill slits on the sides of their necks, and no ears (they only have inner ears, connected to the outside by tiny ducts). They have hair, but it’s usually kept very short and restrained, especially in males. Their skin has the texture of sandpaper. Some selachi have stripes; patterns and colors vary, but are confined to shades of gray, muted blue, and brown.
Habitat: Anywhere they can find prey. They’re cold-blooded, so they’re unable to survive in very cold waters. They stick to the more tropical or temperate regions for this reason, and because most other aquatic species live there.
Culture: Mostly asocial. A few selachi choose to live in small schools, either with family or chosen companions. This is rare, though. Most selachi newborns leave their mothers to fend for themselves after birth (they’re born developed enough to survive when placed in a relatively food-rich and safe environment) and selachi don’t make friends easily. They come together to breed, and because of an instinctive tie to other selachi, they don’t hesitate to work together temporarily to achieve something. Usually this happens during hunts. One selachi will injure the prey, others smell the blood and gather, and they all attack the creature. Also, selachi frequently band together to battle other seaponies for territory, etc. selachi value and respect strength, and not much else. Larger selachi hold a dominant position over smaller ones. Typically, selachi are nomadic, following or stalking groups of prey creatures as they move about, or following the general concentration of other creatures. *** Though selachi often act barbaric and clear connections between their actions and basic instincts can often be seen, they are as sophisticated as other seaponies in most ways. They usually have an abundance of practical knowledge, useful as hunting or battle tactics. They do, however, lack in artistic, creative, and ideological thought. In this sense they aren’t very culturally refined, and live more for survival than most other species. They are readily able to communicate using speech, but typically don’t use language for anything else (songs, stories, etc).
Connection to other EOD species: Selachi are greatly disliked by all other pony species. Because of their violent and aggressive nature, they’re considered savage and even evil. They’re feared as vicious predators and fighters. Though selachi usually only attack other seaponies, they’ve been known to actually eat other seaponies when smaller prey is scarce. Because of this, they’re labeled as cannibals as well. They typically avoid preying on other seaponies, though, because their intelligence makes them difficult targets.
Powers: They have a pretty powerful bite (about the same as a human), and razor sharp teeth, which allow them to effectively attack and kill other sea creatures. They can move fairly quickly in the water, and up to 30 mph in short bursts. They’re fast at accelerating and sharp turns, but have poor endurance for long distances. They have an extremely sensitive sense of smell- a drop of blood in 25 gallons of water, and they can smell things about a football field away. They are also very sensitive to electricity, allowing them to detect nearby fish (because they produce electric fields). Their hearing is aided by a lateral line (running from head to tail), a sense organ which detects movement and vibration in the water.
Limitations/weaknesses: Selachi must keep swimming constantly, or they’ll suffocate. They need to keep water flowing through their gills. Selachi also sink if they stop swimming, because they have no swim bladder to keep them buoyant. (They do have a very large liver for this purpose, but it’s not enough to keep them from sinking while stationary). They don’t sleep, but rest for periods of time (while still swimming) to recover energy. Also, they can’t breathe out of water.
Other: Their name is derived from the superorder Selachimorpha, which is the most specific group containing all species (to my knowledge) of sharks. Pretty much everything about them is kept as close as possible to real sharks; in particular, tiger sharks. Because tiger sharks rock. ^__^ Hopefully the stuff about sleeping is alright- scientists really don’t seem to know for sure if sharks sleep.
Ooooh they sound awesome! Something different from the normal MLP. Y'know, I could see these selachi (which I LOVE the the name by the way!) having been born from merponies as a mutation because of the Great death. Hee hee.
Sort of like the story of the chupacabra.
Anyways, I only have one question. Do they have a significant difference in their intelligence? Are they still sentient beings that know and speak to each other etc.? Or are they less intelligent, say more like apes are to humans? I don't get a clear picture right now for either way.
Other than this, I think they sound fine! Once you reply to my question I'll approve.

oh geeze, I totally avoided that topic, didn't I? Anyways, added a little paragraph with some asterisks under culture to answer your question. In short, they're just as intelligent as other seaponies, but are governed more by instinct than free thought.

Wow! Shark ponies! Well I read this after you made the modifications suggested by Jennifer, so I'm OK with their culture. Or their lack of culture. Whatever ^___^ Again, I'm not really an expert in sea ponies, but I don't see any problems from what I know about them. I won't give my official approval yet 'cause I'd like to hear comments from the other more-versed-in-sea-ponies mods first - aside from Jennifer - but I'm giving you my unofficial approval, which means I personally see no problems with them.
Just the tiny little detail, again, just a tiny little question: are they G1s, G2s, G3s? If they're G1s, I guess they're ponies of darkness too, and they too suffered the loss of their older generation with the Great Death, etc etc? I know, I know, I'm repeating the same song yet again, it's a song that is in my mind and won't just leave me alone
And...sorry for the off-topicness, but...

It won't be me who denies the fact that tiger sharks rock, Kamito, but you've gotta admit: the carcharodon carcharis RULES!!!!!! ^__________^

well yeah, but.. tiger sharks pwn, admit it. ^__^ I'm thinking there will be room for significant variation in.. "body type" like there is between sweetheart sisters and clydesdales. So there could be a big bulky selachi who looked like a great white ^__^

oooo..... neat!
Can't wait for your first character pic!!
Since I'm just seeing this now and all the refinery has been done, they look pretty good to me.

Sounds great! Sorry for the long wait for this second approval. Selachis are now APPROVED for PLAY!
ForeignVisitor- 10-08-2006
Oh, shoot! I'm so sorry for overlooking this. I don't know why I thought they'd already been approved. Need one more? Well, since I really see no problems with them, and nor does any other mod, then...
(Bows) Have fun and sorry for the long wait. Work is...driving me crazy @__@ (Not to mention a sudden vicious cold I got yesterday morning, which sent me to bed yesterday afternoon, gave me some high fever by nightfall, and which seems to have retreated and disappeared this morning ^__^ Duh. Peruvian viruses. They're crazy just like the rest of us ^___^ ...)
