I noticed the other day that I kinda left out one thing that echolocation would allow the delphini to do, as it does for real dolphins. Particularly at close range (I'm going to make it 5 feet and under), it allows them to see the insides of a person they are scanning, and be able to tell if they are sick, injured, dehydrated, even pregnant. It would also allow them to spot major weaknesses in the body of a foe (if theyre are any.), which is why dolphins know to hit a shark in the softer area around their gills, where it hurts the most. Now, doing this takes very focused echolocation, and so would require some concentration, and would also use up a fair amount of air.

To try and balance this addition, I'll add that the organ they use to focus their echolocation (I'll call it the melon, cause that's the correct term for it in real life animals) is rather sensitive and delicate, and could be damaged by a blunt strike to their forhead, as it's not protected by their skull. Even a moderate bruise would pretty much rob them of the sense entirely untill it healed, and more severe or repeated damage could make the loss permanent.

Is this ok?

I'm going to say that this is alright, since it can only be used at very close range and it uses up a lot of their air. So it's not likely it would be used often.

Since I have a feeling someone may ask 'what is a lot of air' let me clarify by saying that using it to fully scan someone the size of an average sea pony, would use up a third of their full air supply, in other words, about half an hour worth of air.

Now that you've clarified this a bit more It douns reasonable. Dolphy asked this of me the other day, but it was more general so it sounded/was more powerful.

I think we can accept this under these conditions. I approve the edit!

Dolphy- 09-02-2006
So um, how many approvals do I need before I can make the edit?

ForeignVisitor- 09-03-2006
Good question, Dolphy ^__^ To be absolutely honest, the mods haven't talked about that yet (as far as I remember). New species are not often submitted, and we just agreed that a member wanting to add a new species to the game would have to first submit a document defining their culture, etc, etc, before submitting a character for approval belonging to that species. That way, all mods would have the opportunity to check and give feedback about that species. We never agreed on how many approvals were necessary, but I'll tell you what: I will personally try and contact the other mods as soon as possible to talk about this, kay? Mind you, two of them at least are not available during the weekend.

I've checked the addition you made, and I really see no problems with it either, so I'm giving you my approval too, kay? With just one observation: The Delphini order already have the echolocation power, and with this added detail they can also detect weaknesses in a foe close to them, determine if they're injured or not, even pregnant, etc etc. I think you've balanced it very well and I really see no problems with it, but I'm gonna say that any new characters beloging to this species will have to take these inherent abilities into consideration to balance any extra magical powers they can have (all ponies of darkness can have something extra). Not that they can't have extra magical powers. Only that we should take it into consideration to keep balance. In the case of Delfina there's no problem at all, of course, since you've given her no extra powers. I mean for future characters, kay? mlpeod/wink.gif

With three official approvals, I'd normally say go ahead with it. But since you've brought up the issue of how many approvals are necessary, I don't really think I have the authority to deny the remaining mods the opportunity to give their feedback. They might have seen this and not given feedback because they see no problems, but also they could have not seen this, or are waiting to mull it over carefully and are still willing to say something. So just a little bit of patience, kay? ^__^ Like I said, I'll try to contact them as soon as possible just to make sure that they have nothing to say, and then I'll try to discuss with them about how many approvals should be necessary for a new species. Sounds fair? (blinks)

Dolphy- 09-04-2006
Yes, fine with me.

ForeignVisitor- 09-07-2006
Well, Dolphy, as promised, I tried to contact the remaining mods ^___^ The edition is approved now, kay? You can go ahead and add it.

And from now on, we've decided that three approvals should be enough for a new species.

Ok, thanks a lot. The edit is done now.
