Personality: Joel is a loner most of the time. But now after the death of his mate (you'll never met her or really hear about her) he is looking for his sister, Kara.


History: it happened right during the Great Death (and that this was the reason why their folks died), The caretaker..she was just an eight or nine year old pony like Joel, so yeah, they were taking only babies

A couple of years afterwords and a long ways away he found a mate. Then just a month ago she passed on and so did the foal she was carring. In a fit of remorse for diserting his own sister he now searches for her.

Just one itty-bitty question...does he wear glasses? Or is that just for the drawing?

I'm all OK with his appearance and everything. It's just his age and history that I'd like to work a little on. Ah! Dont' get me wrong ^__^ His age is just fine, but it's the connection with Kara's history and the Great Death that I don't understand completely. I'd just like to ask you to ellaborate a lil' bit more on it.

See, Kara's 22, right? That means that Joel Heartlock (I love the name, by the way ) was only 1 year old when he was "carrying her on her back" and took her to the orphanage. One year old ponies...well... wouldn't be much older than one or two year old humans, according to our conversion scale. So it seems a little odd that a one year old foal would be able to carry her to the orphanage, and that the "old mare" there (as you described in Kara's dream in "Moving On") would just let him go, since he too was just a baby, instead of taking him into the orphanage too.

UNLESS Joel took Kara to the orphanage not right after her birth, but years later (it would have to be, at the latest, when Joel and Kara were five and four, right before the Great Death. You know that after the Great Death no older ponies were left alive, only foals in the whole land) But then, that would mean that Kara spent very little time in the orphanage, since the old ponies would've died in the following months.

I'm sorry for being so picky about these details, but the EoD history is complicated (what else is new? ^^) and I like paying attention to these lil thingies to avoid inconsistencies. One thing I was going to suggest (just a suggestion, you can work out the problem as you prefer) that you could make Joel several years older than Kara (27 would be his maximum allowed age, no pony of darkness can be older than Justice). That way he would've been five when Kara was born, and maybe took her to the orphanage say a couple of years later. That way Kara could've stayed there a couple of years too before the Great Death. Well, just a suggestion. Please ellaborate a little on this and I'll give you my approval .

If you think that would be best yes I would change his age to 27. I was about to ask a question anyway because I never really noticed an answer unless someone asked this before..

Do ponies age more like people or like real ponies who at 1 are more like adults then us.

But anyway I am open for any ideas on how to make it where he had left Kara behing...maybe if he just ranaway and Kara was left to fend for herself? Anything you guys would think that worked better.

Ponies mature like horses do. Hence why we have the pony to human age chart. For instance on the chart, a pony that is 5 years old acts and is mature as a 9 year old human.

As for his age or history I'm not the expert so I'd wait to hear back from, FV, Sider, CM or 'Drom.

It's my one weakness.

As far as a good age goes... yes, I think 27years would be a good one.

hmm... there's always the "basket on the doorstep method" or "bundled in a blanket"...

The "old" mare that took care of Kara wouldn't have been any older than Joel so I doubt very much that she would've insisted on taking care of him also. So any way you want now that he's 27.

Well, now that he's 27 you can make it in several ways, or just leave it open if you prefer. He's five years older than Karafirelight, so:

1) He could have dropped her in a basket in front of the door if you want Kara to have been left at the orphanage right after her birth. This would have been four years before the Great Death.

2) He could have done it personally, say their parents died two years before the Great Death, when Kara was two and Joel was seven. According to the scale, a pony that age would be more or less like an eleven year old human, so even if the "old mare" was really a Grandma (before the Great Death any age was possible ^__^) I don't think she would necessarily have insisted on him staying or something. I only said she would have insisted if he had been a one year old baby carrying an a few days old baby @__@.

3) You could say that the parents' death happened right before the beginning of the Great Death, when there were still adult and old ponies around in the orphanage. Kara would have been four by then (about seven for a human?), though, and she probably would have some clear memories of her brother. I don't know if you wanted that to be so.

4) You could say it happened right during the Great Death (and that this was the reason why their folks died), so the "old mare" in the orphanage wasn't really that old..she was just an eight or nine year old pony like Joel, so yeah, they were taking only crawling babies ^__^. Er...do baby ponies crawl? @__@ (blushes).

IN SHORT: I think there are plenty of possibilities. Whatever floats your boat ^___^ . Or you can leave it open if you prefer, not saying exactly how old Kara was when she was taken to the orphanage. It was the not-so-great-a-difference between Joel's and Kara's ages that made the history seem a little odd to me, but now that this difference has been broadened I really see no problems.

How about you have him start at dream castle

You could have him stumble upon Digger, Silver Sun and Eleganis. They're close to Dream Castle, and sort of far away fro mwhere Kara is, right?
